Perdita
In November we took in a new foster dog, Perdita. We knew from her photos that she was beautiful; her icy blue eyes are a total showstopper! She's likely some combination of beagle and husky with her tan and black beagle-shaped body, curly, fluffy, tail, and those unmistakably husky eyes. We weren't prepared however for how incredibly sweet she is! She's a couch potato but loves to play with her doggy friends, and she won't give up nudging your hand with her nose when she wants to be pet.
Perdita came to the rescue as an owner surrender along with one of her puppies. Her sad excuse for an owner bred her, sold all of he puppies he could, and decided she was no longer useful to him. It was easy to find an adopter for her little puppy, Pongo, but as usual there is always less interest in the mother. Perdita went into a foster home in Georgia where she enjoyed every second of every day; she had plenty of doggie friends to play with and people who loved her for the incredible dog she is. After a few months, she boarded the transport van to come up north as my foster where she would hopefully have a better chance of being adopted.
All Perdita has ever wanted from us is love, right from day one. On my drive home with her, she gently insisted that I kept petting her for the entire 45 minute drive. When we got home, she was so excited to meet Pepper, and she settled in right away; she found a soft spot to lay down and acted like she was right at home.
Right away, I noticed that her back legs were very thin compared to her front legs. She has very little muscle mass in her back legs, and she compensates by carrying all of her weight on her two front legs. After a particularly exhausting day, she starts to limp but she doesn't ever let it stop her from living her life. She runs around our house and yard with pepper, and even jumps up onto the sofa to snuggle with me. A dog's resilience always astounds me; she never feels sorry for herself or gives up; she's stronger than most people I know.
She is the epitome of a perfect dog. She loves every single person and dog she meets, and she's been the easiest foster I've had to date. She's house-trained, doesn't need to be crated, and just wants to snuggle with her people all day. She almost never barks or whines, and she loves to go for walks. She's still looking for her furever home, but I know it won't take long. In the meantime, I am TOTALLY enjoying having this bundle of love in my home!
